There are two primary types of wrinkles: static wrinkles that form as a result of aging, sun damage, genetics, and other external factors, and dynamic wrinkles that form from repeated facial movements over time. BOTOX® is used to treat dynamic wrinkles including the crow's feet, forehead lines, and frown lines that form between the brows. BOTOX® injections work by interrupting the nerve signals that travel between the muscles and the brain. When these signals are blocked, muscles aren't “told” to contract, which means they can't tug on overlying skin and cause wrinkles and creases.
Prior to BOTOX® injections, the treatment area will be carefully evaluated to determine the ideal placement for the needles. The number of injections used during treatment will depend on which area is being treated, the size of the treatment area, and other factors. Because the needles used during BOTOX® treatment are very fine, most patients experience very little discomfort during their session. Once treatment is complete, it's important not to rub the area right away in order to ensure the material remains in the treatment area so it can be as effective as possible. There may be some mild redness, swelling, or bruising near the injection sites, but these issues will resolve soon after treatment. There's no downtime, and patients can resume their regular routines right away.
Unlike dermal fillers that produce immediate results, it can take a couple of days before BOTOX® results begin to appear, and most patients will see optimal results in about a week.
BOTOX® injections last about four months and periodic touch-up treatments can help results last indefinitely. Many patients find having repeated treatments relaxes lines and wrinkles, enabling them to wait longer between touch-up treatments.
Yes, many patients opt to have both BOTOX® and dermal filler injections to treat both dynamic and static wrinkles to help the entire face appear smoother and more youthful.
